I’m a big time blocker and recently started testing out Pomodoro to achieve short “bursts” of productivity. Working uninterrupted for 25 minutes has been effective, but I find the breaks a little too short to do anything.
I adjust the Pomodoro settings depending on the task I am doing, and based on my pre-planned schedule for the day. I also do it differently based on if I am blocking time because I need to work at least a certain time versus needing to work no more than a set amount of time. I will often say “I’m not gonna give this more than 15m of effort” and tune it down, versus “I need some deep focus time” and set it for 55m with a quick break just to remind me to stand.
If you’re the kind of person who can take breaks, and get back on track, Pomodoro is great. That is not one of my strong points, so I also use a timer on my watch when my break starts so that I have a tactile reminder that the break is over and it’s time to get back to the task at hand. That mostly works.
I am easily distracted and use the Pomodoro system as an excuse to reduce the noise and increase the odds of focus being the outcome, so I’ll often use it as a way to manufacture focus and then get into the zone and skip the breaks.
