Every now and again I get annoyed looking at my profile picture from ten years ago and I try to upload something more current. I’ve been dealing with digital images for thirty years, the profile photo (231K) and a reduced version of my profile photo (109K), both jpeg, are in use in countless places including this forum. Yet when I try to upload either to my Toggl profile I get the error:
We were unable to resize your image, please check your image and possibly convert it to a png or jpeg and try again
We all have better things to do than to keep choosing poorer and poorer jpeg settings until the file gets past the filter, and if the ultimate problem is that your filter will only accept .jpeg and not .jpg in the file name … I mean, come on. If it’s a file size limitation specify the limit in the error message (and if the cutoff turns out to be 100K, reconsider it). If .jpg is not accepted in the file name that’s never been a good practice.
As the topic creator (who, over the seven months since I originally asked have become increasingly unhappy looking at my old photo), I can tell you that the profile photo I use everywhere on the Internet is a jpg, 231Kb, 1140 pixels square at 72ppi. The reduced file I created solely for use with Toggl, and which is still not accepted, is 109Kb, 580 pixels square.
I see that I told you much of this info in the opening post.
Thanks! I’ve tried quite a few sizes, always JPG, etc. I’ve attached a few screenshots of the metadata below. One interesting note is that it looks like Apple Photos tagged them all as having been edited with AI.
Given Eric’s and my experience, at this stage it would probably be easier to just write one automated test that uploads a bunch of random but normal JPG image formats. From what I can see, Toggle is rejecting very standard formats for images that have been accepted by dozens, if not hundreds, of other websites I’ve uploaded them to. This should be easy to test and detect in code.
This is not a big issue at all for me, so I don’t need an answer on this, but just wanted to let you know in case you were not aware of the issue. Thank you for your help and good luck figuring this out!
