Toggl 2.0
Topic content
Hello! I’ve been a long-time user of Toggl Track as a freelancer/solopreneur. I had just started using Toggl Plan (I particularly loved the project segment feature to plan out a project in phases) when I was redirected to Toggl 2.0, which held a lot of promise to be my single source of truth for project management and client billing.
I’ve been looking for project management platforms that are affordable (I’m just a baby consultancy), not bogged down by (frankly unnecessary) AI features, and easy to share with clients. Toggl 2.0 held a lot of promise, and I feel a bit locked in now that I’ve paid.
Here are my current challenges:
- I can’t invoice from Toggl 2.0. Yes, I suppose I could sync between Toggl 2.0 and Toggl Track. My issue with that is twofold: currently, the sync isn’t working great (i.e., very little data from Toggl 2.0 is coming over to Toggl Track); I would have to ALSO pay for Toggl Track to get my branding on my invoice.
- The way that projects are currently set up in Toggl 2.0 doesn’t make it easy to set up project phases (Toggl Plan’s project segments would be the kind of thing I’m talking about here). What this means is that I have to set up a project with “tasks” as phases and “subtasks” as tasks, which also means that I can’t have an additional layer of “subtasks” for items that need to be broken down further. The result is that I have a very long list of tasks at one level, a task list in my planning view that is a bit unwieldy, and a client view of the project that is a bit difficult to read. In an ideal world, I would be able to have project phases (e.g., onboarding, design, implementation, post-project), tasks (e.g., kick-off meeting in the onboarding phase), and subtasks (e.g., schedule meeting, confirm attendees, create presentation, test tech under kick-off meeting). I would also be able to collapse/expand/filter these items in the task view so I can focus on planning just the subtasks under a specific task under a specific phase. Recognizing that how I want to work just may not be how you want to design your product (which I’d appreciate knowing now before sinking more time so I can just take what I’ve spent on your software as a loss), this would be the thing that would allow me to run the operational side of my business off of Toggl 2.0.
- I cannot currently duplicate/reschedule a recurring task if it has subtasks, but I do have routine activities that would benefit from this ability. For duplication, I have a project that has activities that need to happen multiple times throughout the year (i.e., I facilitate 4 quarterly meetings that all have the same foundational tasks in order to make them successful); it would save me a lot of time to be able to create the task and subtask (or phase and tasks if you were to make the changes above) once and then duplicate it. I also have recurring tasks that I would not treat as projects but that have multiple steps (e.g., I have a monthly financial review task that has multiple subtasks under it that I want to make sure I don’t forget, like getting my bank statement, credit card statement, receipts, invoices all in order).
I’m not sure if others have found these points of friction, but they’re definitely showing up for me and making it difficult to put all my eggs in the Toggl basket while also taking up space as I navigate a tight financial situation and hesitate to pay for another platform.
