Two Instances of Toggl Track in Win 11 System Tray

Post Title: Two Instances of Toggl Track in Win 11 System Tray

Your Question/Topic: For probably months now, I have had two instances of Toggl Track that run simultaneously in my Windows 11 system tray.

One instance loads at startup & it has been running continuously for over 4,000 hours now. It is greyed out & when I click on it, it opens a login window. (While this is entertaining, I should probably try to stop this process)

The second instance loads when I manually open the application from the start menu. It loads my normal account, and I actively use it to track my activities.

Does anyone know what may have caused this, or how to correct it? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It sounds like you have one instance of Toggl Track that’s stuck in an unresponsive state running in the background, while your working instance is functioning normally.

To resolve this, try these steps:

  1. Right-click on the greyed out instance in your system tray and look for an option to close or quit it.

  2. If that doesn’t work, open your Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), look for Toggl Track processes, select the greyed out one, and click End Task.

  3. Once you’ve closed the stuck instance, check your Windows startup settings to make sure Toggl isn’t set to launch multiple instances on startup. You can do this through Settings > Apps > Startup, and disable Toggl if it’s listed there with startup enabled.

  4. Restart your computer to ensure both instances are completely cleared out.

  5. When you restart, only manually open Toggl from your Start menu, and don’t let it auto-launch at startup unless you want that behavior.

This should eliminate the duplicate instance problem. The greyed out one appears to be a crashed or orphaned process that’s been running without properly connecting to your account.

Thank you @Support

Your instructions pointed me in the right direction. Somehow I had 2 versions of the app installed on my system & I think they could both run at the same time. I did an uninstall & deleted some folders. Then I reinstalled. Now everything appears to be working normally again.
