Your first feedback about Toggl Focus

Hi Rasa,

The Tasks sidebar can quickly become pretty long and would be easier to manage if tasks can be grouped and the groups twirled open/closed. Subtasks could be displayed as children of their parent task, with each parent task having a foldout arrow to expand/collapse the subitems.

For drag-and-drop, I’d suggest that if one task is dragged onto another that it becomes a child (subtask) of that task. And similarly a subtask could dragged out to separate it or parent it to a different task.

I know that may be a lot to ask for. For the time being, I can use filtering to view tasks by the project I am working on.

Thank you!

Thanks for your feedback @AxonGenesis! I’ve passed it on to the team. I’m curious - do you use any other tools for planning, or have you switched to Toggl Focus completely?

One thing I would really love is the ability to link projects that feed into each other For example, I am currently working on one-time (or rarely repeated) project where I am developing/updating data and then that data is going to go into an online viewer. But, management of the viewer as is it’s own, on-going, project.

So currently it is:

  • Data Development Project
    • Create data
    • Clean-up Data
    • Send data to program managers
    • Upload New Data to Web viewer
      • duplicate Web Viewer Project tasks/subtasks or or completely switch projects
  • Web Viewer Project
    • Update Widgets
      • Swap Widget A to Widget B
      • Add new keywords to Search Widget
    • Update Permissions
      • Add Lady McLadyface to access group
      • Remove Guy McGuyface from access group
    • Update Viewer Data
      • Load data updates
      • Load new data
      • Make sure widgets are linked to correct data

What I would love is the option to:

  • Data Development
    • Create data
    • Clean-up Data
    • Send data to program managers
    • Link to Web Viewer Project/Update Viewer Data Task

Hi, just got access to Toggl Focus today and tried it for a while. I use Track for basic time tracking. I don’t use Plan.

Great idea to integrate tracking and planning. I’ve been wishing that Track woud at least be able to integrate with Google Tasks like it does with Calendar. Tasks is pretty barebones (although simplicity can be an asset). But if Focus could replace Tasks, and add proper project planning features to it, on top of Track’s functionality, that would be pretty compelling.

To replace Tasks, it would need to provide at least the same functionality. Perhaps also synching back to Tasks, at least when first starting with Focus.

Same with Track. I started a time entry in Focus, but it does not sync with Track, and duplicating entries manually in Track would not work. For me to use Focus I think I’d need one of two things: either Focus syncs back to Track, to use things like reporting and the mobile app, or Focus gets those features (eventually the latter, so no need to jump between apps).

It imported entries from Track fine, nice. And the interface is wonderful, as clean as Track’s, which I love.

Focus is looking really promising, thank you for letting me test it.

Looks promising, but needs somechanges.

  • Integrate better with Toggl Track (like the Google Chrome Extension, etc.) for more seamless tracking…and also carry over the descriptions AND project name not just one or the other
  • Save the “to do list”/tasks filters/view preferences OR make the automatic view not show completed tasks. I shouldn’t have to manually filter old, completed tasks away every time I want to look at my tasks
  • Add due dates to tasks
  • Sort tasks list by that day’s priorities AND by due date
  • If I don’t check off/finish a task, I wish it would stay on my calendar/keep getting pushed until completed

I’m intrigued. I’m a Todoist power-user and use Toggl for time-tracking. It would be neat if one tool could handle both functions well.

Initial reactions: I really like being able to quickly add an estimated task duration. (That’s something Todoist is annoying about.) I notice that it looks like I’ll be able to see my estimated durations next to my actual Toggl durations. That would be super cool for reflecting at the end of the day/week to compare what I originally time blocked out to what I actually ended up doing.

I also love that you can schedule/log multiple work blocks for one task. I have some big projects that take multiple work sessions but don’t necessarily have discrete subtasks, so I can see this being really useful.

I’m glad to see Priorities and Connect to Calendar. I heavily use priorities, and I would definitely want to see my calendar events in Toggl Focus to be able to time block around them.

It seems like the weaknesses will probably be on the tasks end. I tried the “Import” option via text, just pasting a giant list of my “This Week” tasks from Todoist. It only “found” 22 of the 42 tasks (though admittedly it was a giant list that wasn’t formatted for the purpose) I haven’t really used it enough to tell for sure because I’m reluctant to uproot my whole system.

Hi Rasa, this is an amazing app! It has neatly consolidated my old workflow of juggling Google Tasks and Toggl.

I’m curious about the ‘Focus’ —will it be a fully paid module like ‘Plan’, or will it adopt a freemium model similar to ‘Track’, with a subscription only for premium features?

I greatly enjoy the idea of one tool to rule them all, and I believe the Toggl team can make it. One thing that is currently missing, in my opinion, is notifications. I need to set up notifications for tasks so I can see them on my phone and watch.

This is looking great. I use both Track for years and recently using Plan to manage my daily capacity to plan when I can schedule in a new piece of work, so having them combined makes a lot of sense. There are a couple of main pieces of functionality that I rely on that are missing:

  • Desktop App - Idle Notification is a life saver
  • Daily Capacity on the timeline. Plan shows how much free time left for each day per person. Perfect for tracking when you’ve over committed.
  • Browser Plugin - This is useful to create new time entries based on MS Devops tickets, Trello cards etc.

The idle notification was the reason I picked Toggl track many years ago, and after picking up Toggle Plan recently the capacity feature has been amazing for planning deadlines for clients, so I hope these are on the roadmap!

Looking forward to having both apps tightly integrated and so far it looks really promising

My calendar events are showing even though I’ve set up my external calendar integrations. To be honest, I’m a bit lost as to what Focus adds on top of the original Toggl…

Hello! I’ve just imported data to Toggl Focus from Toggl Plan but what I really, really enjoy about Toggl Plan is the very clear and obvious timeline with big blocks for my work with different colours. I can’t seem to find a way to make it appear the same in Focus, and that is pretty much all I want. Is there a way to make it look the same? I would just continue to use Plan, but it seems like everything will be migrating to Focus at some point?

Really cool concept. A tiny thing’s I’m having trouble with:

  • My Toggl track workspace isn’t showing up on Toggl focus. It says I have to create a new organization (which is basically empty)

Hi, thank you for the feedback! Could you elaborate please - when saying you’d need to set up notifications to see tasks on other devices, do you mean to be notified for start times of scheduled tasks? Any other notifications you’d ideally like to have?

Hi @dinc, thank you for the feedback, will pass it on to our product team! Good news is we’ve already kicked off work on showing capacity more clearly in Toggl Focus, so stay tuned! :star_struck:

Hi @Philip_Ratcliff , thank you for taking the time to try it out! Could you elaborate on what didn’t make sense in the calendar view - would you expect that only some events would be shown, or something else?

Hi @Rumi , I meant to say that my events aren’t showing, but they are now. What I can’t work out how to do is to convert them into tracked events in the Time Tracking view. I know how to do it in Toggl Track, so that’s why I’m not sure what the added value of Toggl Focus is.

Thanks,

Philip

Hi @beem , thanks for reporting - I’ve sent you a message asking for some additional details, so we can fix the issue!

Hi @Ekaterina_Pliassova, thanks for the feedback!

…the very clear and obvious timeline with big blocks for my work with different colours. I can’t seem to find a way to make it appear the same in Focus, and that is pretty much all I want. Is there a way to make it look the same?

If you navigate to the Timeline view in Toggl Focus, you will see a similar view to the one in Toggl Plan. It has been redesigned to be one flexible timeline instead of multiple separate ones, and you can use filters and group by projects, people and tags to customize your view.

Is there anything additional you’d like to see carried over from the Toggl Plan timeline feature?

I would just continue to use Plan, but it seems like everything will be migrating to Focus at some point?

We’re building Toggl Focus as an enhanced version of Toggl Plan, and it will indeed be replaced in the coming months. We want to make this an upgrade for our users, so we really appreciate input and build accordingly. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts!

Hey @Philip_Ratcliff, thanks for clarifying, this is valuable feedback on logging time from the calendar view. Here is how to convert calendar events into time entries.
Additionally, in the Time Tracking view, you can see a split view of tracked vs. scheduled time. Curious to hear your thoughts if you have the chance to give this a go!

Mmm… seems a bit convoluted. Why can’t I just convert the calendar event from the event pop-up rather than having to enable the day and then confirm the event?
