The mini timer in the Windows desktop app used to be so good:
It took up a minimal amount of space but could be resized horizontally.
You could see the project of the currently running task.
Typing a task name in the text field would provide a dropdown of past tasks that have that substring, then you could quickly click them to start tracking that task.
As of at least 10.9.3, the new desktop app’s mini timer breaks all this:
It’s large and clunky, and resizing seems buggy on Windows.
You can’t see the project of the active task on one line and need to expand it vertically to see it on the second line.
There doesn’t seem to be autofill or automatic task starting from typing partial task names into the text field.
Would you consider reverting it to the previous, much more elegant version? Thank you for all your work!
Thank you for the feedback! The previous mini timer’s simplicity and functionality were indeed valuable. Reverting or reintroducing those features—like autofill, compact design, and project visibility—would greatly enhance usability. Hoping this gets addressed soon!
Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and detailed feedback on the mini timer in the Windows desktop app.
We completely understand how valuable the previous design was in terms of simplicity, functionality, and ease of use.
I’ve reported your feedback to the team, emphasizing the importance of these features to our users. While I can’t promise immediate changes, I’ll keep you updated on any developments related to this.
Your input is incredibly valuable in helping us improve. Please continue sharing your thoughts—it truly makes a difference!
The visibility of the project was also a most important key element in our work processes. I’m very sorry that at the moment this can only be done by using the mini timer in 2x wider mode than before, which is no longer “mini”! Thank you for supporting!
Thanks for being so responsive, Marie! You can add my voice to everything Gabe said as well. Being able to see the Project on the mini timer is essential for me. The previous design was compact and gave me everything I needed. This change impacts my use of Toggl so much that I created a forum account just to tell you.
Seconding this. Previous mini-timer was flawless, this one has new issues:
It’s clunkier and harder to drag around. Whenever clicking on the mini-timer (anyhere) it clicks inside the task text as if I clicked to write the task name, when I really didn’t. Maybe adding those three little dots, like Notion does, on the left of the mini-timer could come really handy. Giving it a dedicated area to drag it around.
When I click outside the mini-timer the textbox is still selected as if I was writing, kind of distracting.
Also, since we are drawing attention to the mini-timer, the shortcut to show/hide it never worked for me. Starting with “Ctrl” makes it problematic, since using “Ctrl+M” could already be in use by the app you are currently viewing. However, using “Alt” for all mini-timer shortcuts works flawlessly. Maybe changing the shortcut from “Ctrl+M” to “Ctrl+Alt+M” could fix it.
Hey @Sarah
Thank you for your kind words, even in this a-frustrated-users conversation! I’m carefully noting all your feedback and passing it on to our product team. We truly appreciate your input!
For me, this new minitimer design has no advantage, only several disadvantages.
it is more difficult to drag around, as the text and time automatically capture the mouse. I do not need to edit the time in the minitimer and editing the text worked well before.
it does not show the project name, which was handy in the previous version
it is a bit wider, meaning it overlaps more with toolbars and menus of many programs when positioned on the screen top
I turned off the auto-update on my second computer to use the previous version, but the Toggle updated anyway! It would be great to have the possibility to downgrade again.
Possibly, there could be an option in the preferences to have an extended minitime as now or minimalistic as before?
Thanks for sharing your feedback! I’ve added it to the existing feedback we’ve received on the minitimer so the team is aware of your concerns. I understand how these changes impact your workflow, and I appreciate you taking the time to detail them.
We’re also keeping an eye on the ongoing discussions around this, and I’ll share any updates as I have them.
We are completely blocked from using the mini-timer and have NO way of using the app anymore. I am unable to resize the mini timer vertically, only horizontally - which doesn’t help at all.
Isn’t there a way that we can reset the window dimensions to their default? It is VERY annoying because it blocks me completely from using the program. I can only add entries manually after the activity.
