Occasionally, I will be working and notice that Toggl has logged me out unexpectedly, which messes up my timer. Sometimes a forced log-out will stop my timer mid-task. Other times, if it has been off while I am between tasks, it will restart even when I haven’t activated it. I do timed tasks where accurate timing is imperative, and when Toggl logs me out without my noticing, it takes some effort to figure out how much time I have lost or gained.
I only use the timer to time my work on a project, and I don’t use any other features. I don’t use the Chrome extension anymore because it was so buggy and out of sync with the browser timer.
Can anyone explain why Toggl is randomly logging me out? Is there a setting I need to be aware of to prevent this?
Its all happening on the webapp. I dont use it anywhere else. Chrome browser, which is updated and cache cleared regularly. This is an ongoing issue that I have experienced ever since I started using Toggl.
Thanks for that! It sounds like there are two issues at play here: being logged out unexpectedly, and timers stopping. Because Toggl is cloud-based, being logged out of your account will NOT stop a timer on its own.
For the logout issue, does it appear to happen every day, at random times?
It doesn’t happen every day. For a long time, it happened weekly, but the frequency has decreased over the past couple of months. It seems to be less frequent since I stopped using the Toggl Chrome extension. The timer stop/starting thing is even more random, and again, it has decreased as well since I stopped using the Chrome extension. It is likely that I may have misremembered about the timer stopping on a forced logout, but I am sure there have been times when I have stopped the timer, a forced logout happens, and when I sign back in, the timer is going.
Heya Cherie! Our team is also wondering if you can share the date and time it last happened (if you can’t remember, let’s wait until it happens again, then note the date and time) so our team can check our logs!
Hello, just checking in because I have had another random log out. It just happened, about 7:20am CST (01/07/2026). I had just finished a task, clicked the timer button on the Toggl browser page to turn it off, and left my desk. When I came back, I saw I had been force-logged out. When I logged back in, my timer was still running, and I had to click the button again to turn it off. Now I will have to find out exactly when I finished my last task and reduce the time on the timer, all of which is highly inconvenient and wastes valuable working time.
Heya Cher! We’ve been looking into this and have had some issues trying to replicate this. Can you share if this has kept on happening to you in the last week?
