Your first feedback about Toggl Focus

Hi @David_B, thank you for sharing your thoughts! I’m glad to hear you like the option to schedule tasks for specific hours.

On the notes for the visual elements in Toggl Focus, I just wanted to share we do have colours + dark mode:

Would that work for you, or would you still prefer brighter colours/something different?

Hi Abby, glad to hear that! Our product team will discuss when attachments on tasks could be delivered.

As for timelines: we’ll start rolling out the new Toggl Focus experience to Toggl Plan users toward the end of this year, beginning with smaller teams who currently only use Toggl Plan (and not Toggl Track). You’ll hear from us well in advance before anything changes.
You’ll still be able to switch back to Toggl Plan for a while if needed, but since Toggl Focus comes with more powerful functionality, we hope you’ll give it a try and make the switch soon.
Our team is working hard to make Toggl Focus an all-in-one planning and tracking tool that supports your workflows without interruptions. Your feedback is super valuable in helping us get there – please keep sharing so our team can improve quickly and ensure a smooth transition for you!

Thanks Rumi - I will hold off on switching my team over to Focus until we can add attachments to tasks as it is a very important aspect for us. Is there a way to sign up for a notification for specific updates like that?

Hi Abby, makes sense! We post updates here in the Community with tag toggl-focus, and you could set up your preferences to “watching first post” to see when we have new releases and updates. We also send product update emails but usually bundle a couple of releases in there, so this will make sure you hear about it first:

any updates on this, team?

I hope that this feature will become available too. I appreciated the reports from Toggl Track. I used them at the end of each quarter to assess how my time was spent (helpful for personal use and reflecting on productivity).

Really like it so far, but the only thing putting me off using it is the fact I cannot get any of the the recorded time from Focus back in to Tracker

Hi @beem, are you able to see your Toggl Track organization when using the Import option? You should now be able to select your Toggl Track org there. Let me know if this doesn’t work!

Yes! I agree, these are key features!

Hi - Thanks for the tool!

LIKES: UI and UX are good: great balance between information and features: not overwhelming and much better as toggle plan.
MISSING: Sync Focus Tasks ←→ Toggle track app on MAC and IOS
so I don’t have to copy and paste them
Superlike: Its still free!
Toggl Track is the best substitute for pomodone/roundpie for me. But I really miss an integrated task and project management for solo-entrepreneurs. With task sync it could close the gap, while still keeping a separation of concerns.
Track for execution, Focus for planning.
I prefer to use an separate app or menubar icon for time tracking purposes.

Hey @rumi I’m not able to see the “Import data” button in the sidebar or the Profile settings.
I might know what’s going on. I have two Toggl accounts:

  • bee***@icloud.comicloud.com (main account)@outlook.com
  • bee***@outlook.com (secondary account I used to recover lost data)

A few weeks back, as I was recovering my main account data, I signed up for Toggl Focus from my secondary account. And it was linked with the Track Org & Workspace in the Outlook account.

Post data recovery of my main account, I migrated the Track data in the secondary one to the main account to unify all data.

Here’s the problem: the secondary account Toggl Focus account is stuck and “paired” with the old Toggl Track workspace that has already been migrated to the main one. Meaning…

I can import my main account org Toggl Track data only from the secondary Toggl Focus account.

My Toggl Focus account associated with my main Toggl account doesn’t show me the Toggl org associated with it. Hopefully I made that clear. If not, Here’s a loom breaking down the issue live. No "import" button in My Toggl Focus | Loom

Thanks,

Beem

How do i select the correct project when i cannot see which client it is? And cannot add tags anymore? Now i found that i first have to start a timer and the click on the entry to add tags. And, tags from Toggl wasnt imported? So all tags i have on my entries are gone?

Its the same problem if you go to Reports… under the Project and task breakdown you cannot see what client. And if i switch to Client view.. i cannot see what project.

Also cannot filter by tag any more?

You force us to switch over to Focus soon from Toggl, but the functions we are used to are gone? I’m so happy with Toggl so i feel a bit sad now :expressionless:

I’ve been using Toggl Track happily for a few years now, and as I’m branching out into independent freelancing in my own business, I’ve been looking for a project management system. I’m hopeful that Toggl Focus will be a suitable option for me, but my main concern is how new it is: the fact that features are still rolling out means it might not have the functionality I need yet, or in the near future, or ever. So my first question is whether there’s a timeline of rollout dates for upcoming features, and/or a list of features that are definitely ‘in the works’?

I’ve had a look through Focus and found that some of the reported features don’t yet seem to be available (at least to me). For example, if I create a project, I can’t add a client or tags (the options are greyed out).

Finally, I just wanted to highlight a list of features that I would like to see integrated. They’re in no particular order, but I’ve starred the ones that are most important for me, and that I would need ASAP, if I’m going to use Focus as my project management app. I know some of these have been mentioned before (I wasn’t able to read all the comments), but they serve as an upvote on those suggestions. I’ll keep my comments on each minimal, but if you’d like more explanation or example use-cases, please let me know.

  • *Billable rates: including flexibility for different rates per workspace/client/project/task; lump sum or hourly (or other intervals), include/exclude VAT (or other tax rate), etc.
  • *Payment status: option for each billable project and task; mark as, e.g., Invoice Issued, Paid, Refunded, etc. (user can define); status integrated in reporting/analytics to show outstanding balance for a client
  • Custom holidays: add other annual observances to public holidays list (from other calendars, or user-defined); ideally includes moveable holidays (e.g., Good Friday)
  • *Client management: much more functionality/options, including client’s contact info, notes about client, billing preferences (e.g., per project, monthly, per session, …), tags/categories, etc.
  • *Project management: same features as Track at least; also tags, notes, etc.
  • Planned time: in calendar view, tasks in tasks panel show indication of planned/unplanned, completed, estimated time (e.g., “4 (3/10)” is 4 unplanned hours, 3 completed hours of 10 estimated hours)
  • *Times for recurring tasks: add start time when creating a recurring task so it is placed properly on the calendar automatically
  • *Editing recurring tasks: similar functionality to standard calendar apps (changes apply to this instance, all instances, or this and future instances)
  • *Task types: add a variety of task types beyond the default ‘Task’ (e.g., meeting, call, research, development, …); users can create custom task types with different defaults for each; status options can be different per task type
  • Custom fields: users can create custom properties for tasks (or specific task types), with different field types (e.g., text, dropdown, checkbox, …), computations, progress bar, etc.
  • Subtasks: subtask properties (including further/nested subtasks) can be set when created (e.g., in the main task creation window, creating a subtask opens the subtask window to set its properties; if a subtask is created within the subtask, it opens another window, etc.)
  • *Recursive estimated time: like Track’s ‘Calculated task-based estimate’ in project settings, but for each task (so a task’s estimated time is the sum of its subtasks’ estimated times, and likewise through levels of nested subtasks)
  • Weekly total in calendar: calendar view also shows total weekly hours (not only daily hours); maybe also planned vs. completed (this would also apply to daily hours)
  • *No double dipping in calendar: overlapping hours can be counted only once; maybe as a calendar/project/task setting (‘Count overlapping hours?’); applies to calculating daily/weekly totals (not to time tracking, billing, etc.)
  • Projects board view: each board is a project and shows all tasks assigned to that project; filtering still as normal (including which projects display); could also be added as a view in the project overview
  • Weekly board view: each board is day of the week, with navigation as in the calendar, shows tasks scheduled each day; allows viewing weekly plan without clutter of time blocks and other calendar events
  • Mini-reports in calendar/board view: mini-reports show summary of estimated and completed hours per project and/or client (filters? both?) each week
  • Goals: can start from template in Track, but should be more versatile (e.g., setting quarterly/annual goals, not necessarily restricted to x hours per time period, editable), can be linked to tasks, progress bar towards completion, mark as complete, user-defined reward for completion
  • Dependencies: link tasks for dependencies, i.e., task B can’t be completed until task A is done

Thanks so much! Congratulations to the team on a new app, and I hope it will be one I can start using soon.

Hi @Tobias, thank you for the feedback - I’ve passed it on to our product team! Please also note we’re not forcing users to switch over to Toggl Focus. Toggl Plan will be around for a while to ensure that, when you do switch, you’re able to maintain your workflows and there is no disruption. We appreciate your time in testing Toggl Focus out and sharing your thoughts!

Hey @tjdickinson thanks so much for the detailed feedback points, shared them with our team.

Thank you! I really like your services!

I was a bit afraid because i read something about Toggl that made me feel like it was shutting down now in october. But i must have misunderstood that!

I’ve been playing around with Focus a bit and can see it’s got lots of promise! I’m excited to see it develop further.

A few questions in the meantime…

  1. Is there / will there be an API available similar to Toggl Track?
  2. Is it possible to import tasks and projects from a spreadsheet or CSV?

Hey @beem, apologies for the delay!
Could you try to enable the Toggl Focus product for your workspace “The Machine” from the Admin Console which you can access from here: https://accounts.toggl.com/console? See more information in this article: Managing Toggl Tools in a Workspace. After enabling Toggl Focus for the workspace, there should be an import option.

I know that this is the way of things but Toggl Plan going away is my personal nightmare. I hope that as much as possible, Toggl Focus’s timeline view can be a replacement.

Here are some of my initial barriers that I’m hoping you can help with:

  • Is there any way so that multi-week tasks will show as a solid bar across weekends, rather than being broken up into multiple bars for each week? It makes it very difficult to distinguish a multi-week task from a single week task, or to arrange the calendar to remove whitespace (since it’s hard to predict how tasks will organize when I move a multi-week task around).
  • No checklists were brought over from imported Toggl Plan tasks– it seems like those are being replaced by subtasks. However, do I need to manually recreate all of these, since they weren’t imported?
    • Similarly, it looks like custom status options also didn’t come over. I can’t tell if those are going away, or if I need to recreate them again via boards like in Toggl Plan. Also, are those statuses no longer shown in task names? I would love to be able to view status at a glance, by having it shown like it is in Toggl Plan’s timeline.
  • Are right-click actions (where you right-click on a task, and you can quickly mark it done, etc) going away? I use these all the time and they’re a major time & click saver. Especially for changing status/marking tasks done, or deleting them.
  • Can you please make the scroll bar at the bottom of the window (to scroll horizontally) much larger? Scrolling left/right is a constant part of using the timeline, but now the scrollbar is tiny compared to Toggl Plan & harder to hit.
  • Is there any way to increase the text size of tasks? I can zoom the window, but then that just also increases the amount of space lost to the top menu.
    • Relatedly, I appreciate being able to collapse the left menus, but is there a way to also collapse the top menu (with Timeline/Saved Views, and Filters/Capacity) or to combine that all into one menubar instead of two? I’m really just trying to maximize the amount of space that I can see the timeline, since that’s the only thing I’m using.

Also, this might just be a temporary error on my end, but when I imported my Toggl Plan data, it also imported deactivated user accounts and reactivated them. However, it gives me an error when I try to deactivate them again. Is it not possible to deactivate users in Toggl Focus or was this just a random issue?

In any case, I’m absolutely terrified that Toggl Plan is going away, and really hope that you can make changes that preserve what makes it so special. I’ve been using it for years (started back when it was Teamweek) and it’s been an indispensable companion. I’m worried that Toggl Plan going away would actually make me worse at my job, because of how essential it is for my time management.

Couldn’t agree more. We’ve also been using Plan since it was Teamweek. This is an absolute nightmare. Sure there are some things that could be tweaked and upgraded a little but all in all the software is just what we need it to be. No more, no less. We’ll be forced to find another option if we can’t continue using Plan as we always have.
